When you log into iCONN, the system reads your computer's IP address to
verify that it matches any of the IP addresses of institutions that are
authorized to access iCONN (as described at
http://www.iconn.org/WhoCanAccessDb.aspx). These addresses (or
address ranges) are registered within iCONN and are checked each time a
user logs into iCONN.
Register your "public" Internet addresses - the IP addresses that are registered
with the InterNIC Registration Service. Within an isolated network, IP
addresses can be assigned at random, as long as each one is unique. However,
connecting a private network (your school or library network) to the Internet
requires using registered IP address (called Internet addresses) to avoid
duplicates.
The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers
separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example,
149.152.88.121 could be an IP address.
As a general rule, the following IP addresses are NOT public and cannot be used
for IP authentication:

All IP addresses that begin with 10.

All IP addresses that begin with 90.

All IP addresses that begin with 192.168.

All IP addresses in the range from 172.16.* * to 172.31.*.*
Use IP Lookup to display the current public IP
address of a computer. The IP address that displays should be equal to or within the range of
the IP addresses that you're registering.
DSL or cable modem users:
DSL and cable modem Internet service can be purchased with or without static IP
addresses. For example, SNET offers static IP addresses as part of their
Professional DSL Internet Service but their Standard DSL Internet Service does
not provide static IP addresses. Services that provide static IP addresses are
generally more expensive than those that do not.
Schools and public libraries subscribing to DSL or cable modem service with
static IPs: Register these IPs with iCONN and patrons using iCONN from within the
library will not be required to enter a library card barcode.
Schools or libraries subscribing to DSL or cable internet service without
static IPs: Your patrons will be asked to enter a valid Connecticut library
card barcode each time they sign on to iCONN.
